You once told me that the first time someone referred to you as “Tanya’s Mom” it took you aback. I forget that you were just 22 when you had me, and so much more than just my Mom. As a mom now myself, I totally understand. You were then, and still are today, Annie Kmyta Cunnington.
Tanya Cunnington. Mixed media on paper. 22”x22”, 2020.
I remember hearing the whine of the bus wheels slow before it started up again. Confused, I turned to you while playing in the backyard and wondered why you didn’t put me on the bus that afternoon for kindergarten. I asked you recently why you kept me home that afternoon. You replied that you must have needed my company. We lounged in our green mesh hammock.
Tanya Cunnington. Mixed media on paper. 22”x22”, 2020.
I’m sorry Mom. I didn’t know that I ran away, or even that you were scared and looking for me. To me, sitting on the boy next door’s bed, listening to music and eating a pink popsicle just felt like the most natural thing in the world.
Tanya Cunnington. Mixed media on paper. 22”x22”, 2020.
Why are you leaving me here with this strange woman and who are these children? Don’t you know that you are my best friend? My equal? We do everything together. As I plant my pea seed in a Styrofoam cup, the wind outside picks up and the sky turns dark. I stand at the bottom of the stairs frightened, and wait for you to come get me.

Born in 1977, Bewabon Shilling is the eldest son of the late Ojibway artist Arthur Shilling. His paintings are inspired by his surroundings, and his subject matter consists mainly of his environment and its local inhabitants. Painting on the shores of Lake Couchiching, Shilling is engrossed by the ever-changing seasons and inspired by the people that come and go in his life. His latest series consists of non-representational paintings based on the Black River that runs near his property in Rama, Ontario and oil sketches of Lake Couchiching.
Bewabon enrolled in a one year Graphic Design program before attending the Ontario College of Art and Design in the field of drawing and painting. In 1999 through OCAD, he was accepted to take part in the Florence, Italy off-campus studies program. Shilling graduated from OCAD in 2001 being awarded both the Norman Jewison Award and the Rose of Cedarvale Scholarship. Since then Bewabon has exhibited both locally at Roberts Gallery in Toronto, and throughout North America and Europe including Santa Fe and London, England. In 2011 Bewabon was chosen to exhibit a painting through the Art Dealers Association of Canada at the Armory Show in New York City. Shilling is also represented by the Collectors Gallery in Calgary, and the Darrell Bell Gallery in Saskatoon.

Bewabon Shilling and Tanya Cunnington formed the Birdbath Collaboration in 2010. Both artists in their own rite, the collaboration was a way for each to explore different avenues of creativity.
Since their inception, they have collaborated on paintings, sculptures and film. They had their first major Exhibition of paintings in the summer of 2015 at a Pop-Up Gallery opened by the collective. Sculptures and Paintings at Lee Contemporary Art is the first time that the collective has exhibited their sculptures in a gallery setting.
The two artists take turns working on each piece together. When one is at a loss of what to do next the other steps in. In order for this process to be successful, it is obvious that each half of the Collective has a huge mutual respect for what the other artist is able to contribute.

Dan was the recipient of the 2015 Jurors Choice Award for his painting Siwash, at the Carmichael Juried Landscape Exhibition, OMAH.
Dan Nuttall – Artist Biography
Dan was born and raised in North Vancouver, British Columbia, where his first job was working as a Biological Interpreter at the Vancouver Public Aquarium. His early education in the biological sciences, particularly marine biology, set into motion a lifelong passion for wild spaces and the creatures that dwell within them.
Moving to Ontario in 1989 to pursue additional education, Dan continued to build on his background in the natural sciences, his academic and professional life focusing on human and non-human animals and issues of space, ecology, design and sustainability. An emerging outsider artist Dan’s artwork stems from his experiences in both the arts and sciences, ranging from the study of animal form and animal perspective to ecological art, explorations of otherness, and the meaning of landscape. Recent paintings have used form from abandoned animal exhibits found in zoos to create“natural” landscapes. Dan works primarily in acrylic on canvas and board but enjoy bringing into being via sculpture, mixed media, installations and oil pastels.

Paracosms | Cabinets of Wonder
New assemblage works by Troy Hourie
A PARACOSM is a detailed imaginary world or fictional universe. Paracosms are thought generally to originate in childhood and to have one or numerous creators. The creator of a paracosm has a complex and deeply felt relationship with this subjective universe, which may incorporate real-world or imaginary characters and conventions. Commonly having its own geography, history, and language, it is an experience that is often developed during childhood and continues over a long period of time, months or even years, as a sophisticated reality that can last into adulthood. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracosm)
In a paracosm one learns how to take a thought or idea and rotate it in order to think about it from the other side. This allows one to, later on in life, put themselves in another's shoes, or remove oneself from a singular embedded point of view to another. It is when an individual takes their point of view and another's point of view and find the delta's between them that they can be the most innovative. Research has shown that the most creative kids, the kids who turn out to be artists or programmers and make up the creative class, have the most paracosmic activity. Janet Read artist statement 2018
My recent work radiates saturated and subtle colour in response to the narrative of light over land and water. "Atmospheric abstraction" describes the forms of paintings inspired by cloud and radiant light.
Lake Simcoe’s colour, space and light have informed my painting practice after my return to this landscape several years ago. Remembered land/lakescapes are imbued with the cumulative effect of looking and remembering. I spent two decades on the shores of Lake Ontario in Port Hope, Ontario and have travelled on the Bruce Peninsula and north of Superior absorbing the inland seas of our province as yet another site of experience of atmospheric narrative and drama.
."Janet Read's abstract works are like landscapes of consciousness that metaphorically interpret various states of being of the natural world," says Christian Bernard Singer, 2016, Senior curator, Tom Thomson Gallery.
The infinite curve of a vast horizon is my inspiration. The rhythmic parade of cloud, mist, rain, wind and waves engendered by these bodies of water, our inland seas, fascinate me and compel my work.
